August 4, 2026 — Archive audit: 86 further articles retracted, 42 annotated: Following the widening below, we audited the full archive of stories no longer on the front of the site but still published and readable. The archive covers May 6 to June 29, 2026 - exactly the period the fabricated storyline ran - and 128 of its 609 stories refer to it. Eighty-six are retracted in full and are listed here: in each, the invented US-Iran war, ceasefire, Strait of Hormuz closure or memorandum is named in the headline, summary or tag, or three or more paragraphs of the story rest on it. A further 42 archived stories - on subjects as unrelated as a chip-market forecast, a British political resignation, the Hajj and the SpaceX flotation - contain one or two sentences referring to the invented events and now carry an editor's note rather than a retraction. The classification was made by reading the stories themselves rather than their index entries, which carry no body text and would have missed 36 of the 128. As before, no text has been deleted and we are not asserting an alternative account of events in Iran. August 4, 2026 — Strait of Hormuz retraction widened to eleven further articles: Our July 3 retraction of the Strait of Hormuz storyline was scoped to the articles filed under that storyline tag, which reached ten of them. It did not reach articles built on the same fabricated premise that had been filed under other tags — markets, oil, gold, bitcoin and G7 coverage that treated an invented US-Iran war, ceasefire and Strait of Hormuz closure as established fact. Eleven such articles are now retracted in full and carry the same notice; they are listed below. A further four articles — on the Dow passing 52,000, the yen's fall to a 40-year low, the Merz government's reform package and a June 26 strike in Lebanon — are sound on their own subjects but each contains a passage that refers to the invented events. Those four now carry an editor's note rather than a retraction, because withdrawing them would wrongly disown reporting we can stand behind. In every case the original text has been left in place rather than quietly amended. We are not asserting an alternative account of events in Iran; we are withdrawing our own reporting because we cannot stand behind it. July 19, 2026 — World Cup round of 16 ends with all three hosts and Brazil eliminated: This article, and our July 15 report on the semi-finals, described Brazil as the defending World Cup champions and as "the holders." That was wrong: Argentina won the 2022 World Cup and are the defending champions. Brazil last won the tournament in 2002. The erroneous descriptions have been corrected in both articles; the reporting on which teams were eliminated, and when, was accurate and is unchanged.

July 3, 2026 — Strait of Hormuz Crisis storyline — retracted in full: This storyline reported that Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was assassinated on February 28, that his son Mojtaba Khamenei was installed as his successor, and that a US-Iran war, ceasefire, and Doha diplomatic process followed. We found no independent, verifiable reporting supporting these specific claims. The storyline originated as an error in our automated drafting process, compounded across later chapters that treated the invented premise as established fact rather than catching it. We do not have independent knowledge of Mr. Khamenei's actual status and are not asserting an alternative account. We are retracting the entire storyline.
