Privacy Policy
The Fold is a small editorial site, supported by advertising. Aside from the data our advertising and analytics partner needs to show and measure ads, we collect as little reader data as possible. This page describes exactly what is collected, by whom, and why — and how to control it.
What we collect automatically
Approximate location. When you load a page, our infrastructure provider (Cloudflare) derives your approximate city, region, country, and latitude/longitude from your IP address. We use these to display local weather in the page header. We don’t store this information; it’s computed at request time and discarded.
Server logs. Cloudflare processes standard request logs — IP address, user agent, requested URL, and referrer — for anti-abuse and operational purposes. We don’t aggregate or analyze these logs ourselves.
What we store on your device
Theme preference. If you toggle dark mode, your choice is saved in your browser’s localStorage so the site remembers it next visit. This data never leaves your device. You can clear it any time in your browser settings.
Advertising & analytics
The Fold is supported by advertising. We use Google AdSense to display ads. Google and its advertising partners use cookies, device identifiers, and similar technologies to serve and measure ads — including, where you have allowed it, ads personalized to your interests based on your visits to this and other sites.
Your choices. You can control or turn off personalized advertising in Google Ad Settings, opt out of third-party personalized ads through industry tools such as youronlinechoices.eu and optout.aboutads.info, and block or delete cookies in your browser. Where required by law (for example under the GDPR and similar regimes), a consent message is shown before personalized ads or non-essential cookies are set, and you can grant, refuse, or later change those choices through it.
For how Google uses information from sites that use its services, see policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
What we don’t collect
- We don’t have accounts, sign-ups, or newsletters, and we never ask you for personal information.
- We don’t run our own analytics or build our own profiles of readers — the advertising data described above is collected by Google and its partners under their policies and your consent choices, not by us.
- We don’t sell reader data ourselves. Note that under some privacy laws (such as California’s), using advertising cookies to personalize ads can itself count as a “sale” or “sharing” of data — use the consent message or Google Ad Settings to opt out where you’d prefer.
Third-party services
The site relies on the following external services:
- Cloudflare hosts the site, serves it through their CDN, and provides the IP geolocation used for the weather chip. Their privacy practices are at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.
- Google AdSense provides the advertising on this site (see “Advertising & analytics” above). Google’s privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy.
- Open-Meteo returns weather conditions when our worker calls their API. We send a rounded latitude/longitude (about 10 km precision); we don’t forward your IP address. Their terms are at open-meteo.com/en/terms.
- Google Fonts serves the typefaces used on the site. Your browser fetches font files directly from Google, so Google sees your IP as part of that request. Their privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy.
Children
The Fold is not directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them.
Changes to this policy
If our practices change, we’ll update this page and the “Last updated” date at the top.
