Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered on July 13 that Senator Flávio Bolsonaro be barred from visiting his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, for 90 days. The restriction runs until after the first round of Brazil's presidential election on October 4, in which Flávio is the leading conservative challenger to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The order followed a livestream in which Flávio read aloud a handwritten letter from his father, who is serving a sentence under house arrest and is prohibited from using social media or communicating through third parties. In the letter, Jair Bolsonaro urged his allies to unite behind his son's campaign; de Moraes ruled that sharing it breached the terms of the house arrest. Flávio called the decision "disproportionate" and accused the justice of trying to interfere in the election — the latest escalation in a years-long confrontation between the Bolsonaro family and Brazil's highest court.
