The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations opened in Morocco on Sunday with Algeria beating Senegal 2-0. Marine Dafeur, the Bristol City midfielder, scored from the penalty spot three minutes before half-time, and Melissa Bethi added the second in the 88th minute to give Algeria all three points in Group A.
Hosts Morocco were scheduled to play Kenya later on Sunday at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in the second match of the opening day.
As this site reported when the fixtures were confirmed, the tournament has been expanded from 12 teams to 16 for this edition, and the four semi-finalists will qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. The competition runs until 16 August.
