The European Union’s Galileo satellite navigation system brought a new spacecraft into operational service on 23 July, without a press release. The notice is a row in the European GNSS Service Centre’s constellation-information feed: GSAT0234, signal identifier E32, carrying a notice advisory to Galileo users numbered 2026041 and typed USABINIT, with the subject line “usable as from 2026-07-23”. The centre’s own glossary defines that code as the moment a satellite enters active service provision and begins contributing to the constellation — in other words, the point at which it starts carrying navigation traffic for the roughly two billion devices worldwide that use Galileo.
Parsing the whole table gives the constellation’s current state: 32 satellites listed, 28 usable and four not. The four have been out for years and each carries its own explanation. GSAT0201 and GSAT0202 are the pair stranded in the wrong orbits by a Fregat upper-stage failure, flagged unavailable since February 2021. GSAT0204 was removed from active service in December 2017 and GSAT0210 in September 2023.
A durability pattern shows up in the clock types. Across all 32 satellites the split is 24 passive hydrogen masers to eight rubidium standards; among the 28 usable ones it is 23 to five. Three of the four failed satellites carry rubidium clocks. GSAT0234, a hydrogen-maser spacecraft, is the only satellite in the table carrying a 2026 notice at all.
